Referees Society AGM 2026-Dinka Peiris to remain in office

The outgoing committee of the Rugby Referees Society of Sri Lanka (RRSSL) headed by former referee Dinka Peiris has been requested by majority of its membership to remain in office for 2026 as well during its upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), The Daily Morning Sports, learns.

The AGM of the Rugby Referee Society is set to be held at the Aryana Grand Hotel, Maharagama at 10.30 a.m. on 10 January.

Peiris has concluded a three-year tenure at the helm of the RRSSL but it is understood that most of its membership has urged the former to remain in office during this year as well.

According to the Constitution of the RRSSL there are no set term limits applied to its key posts and based on majority consensus officials could hold onto their portfolios, a past referee who had served at the said Society stated.

Meanwhile, it is also understood that another section of the refereeing community has requested retired top referee, ex-President of RRSSL, retired Senior SSP and former Police SC and Sri Lanka fly half Nizam Jamaldeen to consider running for the top post of the RRSSL at its forthcoming AGM.

It was not immediately clear as to whether the former Sri Lanka five eighth has decided to contest the President post at the Referee Society AGM with him currently serving in the capacity of a Television Match Official (TMO) in the ongoing Inter-Club rugby season.

Jamaldeen, a stalwart at Isipathana College, has already been a former honcho of the Referees Society and is viewed as a celebrated former star who represented his country in both versions of the game with distinction while carrying that same stature to his role as a much-sought-after referee.

Furthermore, two other noted officials from the refereeing sphere retired referee and coach Priyantha Gunarathna, and retired Air Force officer Sanjaya Fernando are also eying the Presidency of the controlling body for local referees, an inside source revealed.

Gunarathna, an old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy is also a former head coach of St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and current junior coach of Trinity College, Kandy while Fernando is the younger sibling of ex-referee Dilroy Fernando and late Army Major Milroy Fernando.
