Sri Lanka’s chances of hosting the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in February 2027 have come under scrutiny amid concerns over the country’s cricket administration being placed under a government-appointed interim committee.
According to The Sunday Times, the six-team tournament is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 28, 2027. However, Sri Lanka’s ability to host the prestigious event could be affected by the current administrative structure governing Sri Lanka Cricket.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has traditionally been reluctant to recognize cricket administrations established through political intervention, raising questions over whether the current arrangement could create complications for Sri Lanka’s hosting rights.
The development could potentially put the hosting of the tournament at risk if the ICC determines that the existing administrative structure does not meet its governance requirements.
The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy is expected to bring together six of the world’s leading women’s cricket teams, making it a significant addition to the international women’s cricket calendar.
Sri Lanka’s hosting prospects are therefore likely to depend not only on preparations for the tournament but also on the country’s cricket administration and its relationship with the ICC in the coming months.
