ZURICH: Sri Lankan athletics has entered a remarkable new chapter, with 23-year-old javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continuing to establish himself among the world’s elite after producing a sensational 92.07-metre throw at the Zurich Diamond League.
Tharanga secured victory with his final attempt of the competition, once again displaying the composure and competitive mentality that have become hallmarks of his rapid rise.
The Sri Lankan opened with 81.50m, followed by 88.23m, 89.90m and 84.91m, before recording a foul in the fifth round. With the competition on the line, he delivered his decisive 92.07m effort in the final round.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third place with 85.16m.
Another Outstanding Chapter in a Breakthrough Season
Tharanga’s Zurich triumph was far from an isolated performance. It added another major achievement to what has already been a spectacular 2026 season.
Earlier in the year, he produced a huge 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League, setting a new Sri Lankan national record and establishing the world-leading mark at the time.
His 92.07m in Zurich was just 55 centimetres short of his personal best, further highlighting his remarkable consistency at distances rarely achieved in international javelin.
More significantly, Tharanga is repeatedly producing throws close to or beyond the 90-metre mark. That consistency suggests his success is no longer dependent on a single extraordinary attempt, but instead reflects continued technical development, physical strength, confidence and an ability to perform under intense pressure.
Commonwealth Games Gold
That competitive quality was also evident at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Tharanga produced a winning throw of 89.75m to claim the men’s javelin gold medal.
He overcame a world-class field that included India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, underlining the Sri Lankan’s emergence as a serious force at the highest level of international competition.
