ARUGAM BAY: The National Surfing Championship and International Open Tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation, will be held in Arugam Bay from September 10 to 12, bringing together leading local surfers and competitors from around the world.

Alongside the national championship, the three-day event will feature Open Men’s and Women’s categories, as well as Junior competitions for Under-18 and Under-15 surfers.

Approximately 50 international athletes representing 12 countries are expected to compete in the National Open Surfing Championship, while around 100 of Sri Lanka’s top surfers will participate in the national competition.

Officials of the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation announced the details at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday. They also confirmed that the registration deadline is September 8 for both the National Surfing Championship and the Open Tournament.

Lalaka Palliyaguruge, Treasurer and Media Spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation, explained that Sri Lanka’s surfing calendar is divided according to seasonal conditions.

He said surfing competitions are generally held along the southern coast from November to April, while Arugam Bay hosts major surfing events from April to October, making it one of the country’s key international surfing destinations.

The upcoming tournament is expected to provide an important platform for Sri Lankan surfers to compete alongside international athletes while further promoting Arugam Bay as a premier surfing destination in the region.
