England made a powerful start to their T20I series against Sri Lanka, cruising to a commanding 119-run victory in the opening match at Southampton on Tuesday.
Batting first, England posted a massive 254 for 4 in 20 overs, powered by captain Harry Brook’s breathtaking unbeaten 114 off just 49 balls. Brook’s explosive innings included 10 fours and six sixes, setting the foundation for one of England’s biggest T20I totals.
He received strong support from Jos Buttler, who struck a rapid 80 as England’s top order maintained an extraordinary scoring rate throughout the innings. Their aggressive batting approach put Sri Lanka under pressure from the outset and left the visitors facing a daunting chase.
Sri Lanka struggled to find the required momentum in reply. The visitors were bowled out for 135 in 18.2 overs, falling 119 runs short of England’s target.
England’s Sonny Baker was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 for 12, while Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid also made important contributions as Sri Lanka’s batting order collapsed under sustained pressure.
The victory gives England a 1–0 lead in the three-match T20I series, with the second match scheduled to take place in Cardiff on Thursday.
For Sri Lanka, the opening defeat highlighted the challenge of matching England’s aggressive white-ball approach. The visitors will need significant improvement with both bat and ball if they are to level the series and keep their hopes alive.
Sri Lanka entered the series without Kusal Mendis, who was ruled out through injury, with Charith Asalanka leading the side. The squad combines experienced players including Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka and Maheesh Theekshana with younger members of the team.
England, meanwhile, handed a T20I debut to opener Aneurin Donald, while Jofra Archer was rested for the opening game.
Brook’s remarkable century, England’s huge total and disciplined bowling ultimately left Sri Lanka with little opportunity to recover.
With two matches still to play, Sri Lanka will now turn their attention to Cardiff, where they will look to produce a much stronger response and prevent England from taking an unassailable series lead.
