“Kona Man” – The Man Accused of Paving the Way for the Demise of Sri Lankan Boxing

Sri Lankan boxing has experienced moments of glory as well as deep controversy. At the center of one of its most turbulent chapters stands Dian Gomes a figure once hailed as a driving force behind the sport’s rise, but now criticized by some as the architect of its decline.

The Beginning of an Ambition

The story traces back to the 8th South Asian Games held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from September 25 to October 4, 1999. Invited by Jagath Jayasuriya, a senior official of the Sri Lanka Boxing Association, Dian Gomes attended the Games while serving at MAS Holdings. Those close to the events claim that from that moment, he nurtured a clear ambition to one day become President of the national boxing body.

In December 1999, he initiated boxing at MAS. Several of the country’s most talented school athletes were recruited: Upali Bandara, Manju Wanniarachchi, Walisundara, Harsha Kumara, and Bandula Wickramasinghe. Coach Lal Amunugama was appointed to guide them, and in 2000 Anuruddha Ratnayake joined the squad.

With strong corporate backing, the MAS boxing team soon became the most formidable unit in Sri Lanka. Their victories elevated both MAS and Gomes’ standing within the boxing fraternity. Eventually, he achieved his long-held ambition becoming President of the Sri Lanka Boxing Association. With MAS support, he remained a dominant administrator in Sri Lankan boxing until 2016, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a position within the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Doping Controversy and Fallout

The most damaging blow to Sri Lankan boxing during this period came after the 2012 Commonwealth Games. Manju Wanniarachchi initially won gold for Sri Lanka but was later stripped of his medal after testing positive for banned substances at the 2012 Commonwealth Games.

Subsequent allegations suggested that several athletes associated with the MAS Institute were receiving treatments from a medical center in the Kurunegala area. Claims emerged that Anuruddha Ratnayake, Kamal Sameera, and Anusha Kodithuwakku were also implicated in doping violations. Critics argue that these incidents were not isolated but part of a broader system designed to ensure victories at any cost.

The doping scandal severely tarnished Sri Lanka’s reputation in international boxing circles and remains one of the darkest chapters in the sport’s history.

Conflict with MAS and Strategic Shift

By 2016, tensions reportedly escalated between Gomes and MAS management. After submitting a proposal requesting company shares which the board declined Gomes decided to leave MAS. However, he remained President of the Sri Lanka Boxing Association and expected MAS to continue sponsoring national boxing.

When sponsorship did not continue, relations deteriorated. Observers allege that from this point onward, his strategy shifted toward dismantling MAS boxing itself fulfilling earlier public statements that MAS boxing would end when he chose.

The Hela clothing Episode

In 2017, attention turned to the women’s boxing team at MAS Koggala, considered the best in the country. As a board member of the Hela clothing , Gomes reportedly initiated boxing there and recruited the entire women’s team and coaching staff with promises of higher salaries and allowances. Several other MAS athletes and coaches followed.

Critics claim this move was part of a calculated strategy weakening MAS boxing while strengthening an alternative structure under his influence.

Allegations of Administrative Pressure

Serious accusations followed regarding the misuse of presidential authority. It is alleged that Gomes exerted influence over national-level competitions to favor athletes aligned with him. Reports describe pressure on judges, strategic placement near scoring officials, and the inclusion of foreign judges sympathetic to his interests.

Whether fully substantiated or not, these allegations contributed to growing mistrust within the boxing community. Eventually, MAS management decided to discontinue boxing entirely. The consequences were severe: numerous national and international medalists lost employment and abandoned their sporting careers.

Ironically, the Hela Institute itself could not sustain long-term boxing operations, leaving many athletes and coaches unemployed there as well.

International Aspirations and Criticism

Following the collapse of MAS boxing, Gomes intensified efforts to secure a prominent role within AIBA, presenting himself internationally as a transformative figure in Sri Lankan boxing. However, critics argue that the international community did not embrace this narrative.

Abuse of Position and Governance Concerns

Further controversy surrounds allegations of misusing administrative authority to facilitate overseas opportunities for associates. The participation of athletes at the 2022 Commonwealth Games some of whom reportedly did not return to Sri Lanka has been cited as an example of governance lapses. Claims have also surfaced about facilitating travel to European countries for favored individuals.

The Larger Question

For nearly two decades, Dian Gomes was synonymous with Sri Lankan boxing. He often described himself as the sport’s “godfather,” claiming to have sustained it through personal sacrifice. Critics dispute this narrative, arguing that corporate sponsorship not personal funding sustained the sport during his tenure.

Today, a growing segment within the boxing fraternity asserts that Sri Lankan boxing is larger than any one individual. They argue that while administrators may rise and fall, the sport itself belongs to athletes, coaches, officials, and the broader community.

The controversy surrounding Dian Gomes reflects deeper structural issues in governance, transparency, and accountability within Sri Lankan boxing. Whether history ultimately views him as a builder or a destroyer remains a matter of perspective but one fact is clear: the future of boxing in Sri Lanka must rest on systems stronger than personalities.
