Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test against India in Colombo on Monday.
Jayasuriya was found guilty of violating Article 2.2, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match.
The incident occurred after Jayasuriya was dismissed with the final delivery of the day. As he walked back to the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat in frustration.
As a result, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. It was Jayasuriya’s first offence under the ICC Code of Conduct in a 24-month period.
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, meaning a formal hearing was not required.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, while the maximum punishment is 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
