Niroshan Dickwella Returns as Sri Lanka Name Squad for India Test

Sri Lanka have announced their 16-member squad for the opening Test against India, with the return of experienced wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella emerging as the biggest talking point.

Dickwella has been included in the squad for the first Test, scheduled to be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19. His recall marks his return to Test cricket after almost three years, having last represented Sri Lanka in the format against New Zealand in 2023.

The selection comes after a difficult period away from international cricket. In August 2024, Dickwella was suspended following an anti-doping rule violation. His initial three-year ban was subsequently reduced to three months after an appeal, allowing him to resume his cricket career.

Now, his return to the national squad represents a significant opportunity for the experienced wicketkeeper-batter to rebuild his international career.

The decision to recall Dickwella is also likely to attract considerable attention given the circumstances surrounding his absence. For the selectors, led by former Test fast bowler Kapila Wijegunawardena, the decision was not simply about Dickwella’s proven ability with the bat and gloves.

His performances since returning to competitive cricket, along with his conduct on and off the field, have evidently been important factors in his selection.

With a major Test series against India ahead, Dickwella will now have the opportunity to prove that he can once again contribute at the highest level and become an important part of Sri Lanka’s Test plans.
